Chris Cheong – Life

I’ve been trying to think of a personal project to work on this summer, but I couldn’t think of an interesting one. I was then invited to a family relative’s 9th birthday party, which began the ideas. I started to illustrate a small colouring book called the “Kuma Club”, ‘Kuma’ meaning ‘bear’ in Japanese.

Balrog – Custom Munny

June 7th, 2009

I had a blank glow-in-the-dark Munny kicking around, so I decided to finally jump at the opportunity to customize it. I was inspired by a character from the Street Fighter series named Balrog, who is a boxer. Painting really isn’t one of my things, so I decided to make the shirt rather than paint it. I added little details like the string on his gloves. Looking at it complete, I am pretty happy with how it turned out, despite the fact I’m not the best painter.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Balrog character, click here to see an image.

Just recently, I got involved with a new non-profit organization called The A.C.H.I.E.V.E (Action, Character, Hard work, Imagination, Enthusiasm, Vision, Energy) Foundation. They focus their work in Trinidad, visiting local high schools giving motivational speeches on striving for greatness, and encouraging them to do better. They needed a logo that would reflect them as a group, so I created a few. Here is one of them that they enjoyed. I share a lot of their values and appreciate what they stand for, and this logo is my way of saying “thank you”.

Custom Portfolio

May 5th, 2009

So I had this urge to get a tangible portfolio started, just in case a future employer would rather see work they could actually hold and not just look at on a computer screen. I made a visit to the Above Ground art supply store beside OCAD to check out what kind of portfolios they had to offer. It turns out that they range from as little as $25.00 to a whopping $169.99. I’m sure there are more expensive ones out there, but anything over $100.00 is too pricey. I was deciding whether or not I should invest in a portfolio, since it will hopefully be my profession some day, and the fact that my birthday is right around the corner.

I began to look at the portfolio in detail, and realized that I could probably make it myself. The very same day I went down to the local hardware store to pick up the following:

- One 50” x 50” piece of medium density board: $2
- Two constant hinges: $10
- A pack of pop rivets: $5
- Four screw posts: Already had
——————————–
Total cost: $17

After getting a blacksmith to cut the hinges to fit the length of the covers (yes, blacksmiths do still exist), I manually assembled my custom-made portfolio. I finished it off with a vinyl decal of my name. Talk about saving money!

Space INVDR

April 6th, 2009

I’ve recently taken interest in working with wood. I love the smell of saw dust, using a band saw, and just hanging out at Sheridan’s Prop Shop. I think it’s the fact that I’m working with my hands, rather than working on the computer that intrigues me the most. Anyways, I decided to make a fellow designer one of my wooden creations. He’s a good friend and his artist alias fits well with this wooden Space Invader. I think I will do more of these kinds of projects for other people in the future.

Check out INVDR’s work here.

This is the last infographic project for the school year. The premise of the graph is to show my data and page consumption of seven particular web sites. This happens to be the largest school project I’ve done so far, measuring at 50″ x 27″. Now, to finish my final Type in Motion video

Tamil Peek – Logo Design

March 22nd, 2009

This is commissioned work done for a video streaming website, focusing on Tamil-based films. I was asked to create a logo to be used for the header of the website, as well as a watermark to be placed in the lower corner of their images. After some minor changes and adjustments, they are now excited to use the versions shown above on their new website. Both the television and typeface were custom made by myself.

Area Versus Time

March 12th, 2009

This is my latest project that I completed for Information Design. I’m actually happy with how it turned out, despite how stuck I was for a good concept.

The graph pretty much shows the relationship between my family members and how much time each individual spends on the first floor. The circles are depicting time while the coloured lines represent the paths traveled by the respective person.

I decided to draw Wolverine for two reasons. For one, I grew up watching the X-Men cartoon and I’ve always liked it. Two, Wolverine’s classic yellow and blue make him that much more awesome. Be sure to watch it in HD for maximum quality just by clicking the button!

Note: Due to copyright issues and Youtube, I altered the theme song a bit. It originally came from the X-Men Cartoon soundtrack.

Poachers

March 3rd, 2009

Another Type in Motion assignment, only this time it’s a project. We were asked to create a 15-30 second video intro to a news, current affairs or documentary program. The topic I chose was the negative effects poachers have on wildlife.
